I use Photoshop 6.  Open the image.

1.)  Go to Image on the toolbar
2.)  Click Adjust
3.)  Click Auto Levels

Do this on ALL photographs, digital or scanned.

 1. Go to Image on the toolbar
2. Go to Mode
3. Click on Grayscale.
1.) Go to Image
2.) Click Adjust
3.) Click Posterize and select different levels - this photograph was created using level 6.
